How to Hide Facebook Marketplace Vehicle Listings From Friends

Short answer: as far as Facebook's own Help Center says, you currently cannot use "Hide from friends" on vehicle listings. That option is documented for items only, and Facebook's page states you cannot hide listings for apartments, homes or vehicles right now. So if you sell cars from a personal profile, you cannot count on that toggle. What you can do is manage who sees what on your profile, and decide honestly how much friend visibility you can live with.

I sell cars for a living, and this is one of the first things salespeople ask me: "Will my friends and family see every car I post?" Here is what Facebook documents, what it does not promise, and what I would do about it. Facebook changes menus and rules often, so treat this as a snapshot and check the current Help Center before you rely on it.

What Facebook Says About "Hide From Friends"

Facebook has a Help Center article called "Hide my Facebook Marketplace listings from my friends." Here is what it says, in my words:

This is what Facebook's Help Center says as of this writing. Facebook may extend the option to vehicles later, so open the vehicle listing form in your own app and see whether the toggle appears. If it does not, that is your answer.

Who Can Still See a Hidden Listing

Even where the toggle exists, Facebook's separate article on who can see hidden listings is clear that it is limited. Per that page, these people can still see a hidden listing:

Who Can they still see it?
Someone who is not logged in Yes. Facebook says this includes your friends if they are logged out.
Former friends Yes, people you unfriended or who unfriended you.
Friends of your friends Yes.
Search engine users Yes, listings may appear in Google and other results.
Friends, if someone shared the link before you hid it Possibly. A preview can remain in Messenger, and in Stories for up to 24 hours.

Facebook also notes that group listings cannot be hidden. Turning the setting on removes a listing from groups.

What Buyers See About You

Marketplace is not anonymous. A listing is tied to your Facebook account, and buyers can open your Marketplace profile. From what Facebook and other sources describe, that typically includes your name, profile photo, your other active listings and any seller ratings. Facebook's help pages also say you may see mutual friends with someone. Facebook's article on viewing Marketplace profiles does not list every field, so I cannot give you an exact inventory of what is shown. Open your own Marketplace profile, or view a friend's, to see what a stranger sees.

What a buyer can see when they tap through to your regular profile depends on your profile privacy settings: the audience you set for posts, friends list, photos, and so on. That is separate from Marketplace, and it is where you have the most control.

What Your Friends See on Your Profile

Whether a listing shows up in a friend's feed or on your timeline is the behavior "Hide from friends" is meant to control. When the toggle is not available, assume friends may see vehicles in Marketplace, in your Marketplace profile, and possibly in notifications or feed suggestions. I have no documented guarantee either way for vehicles, so I plan as if they will see them.

Steps to Reduce Friend Visibility

Menu names change, so check what your current app shows. This is the general order I would work in.

  1. Start creating a vehicle listing: Marketplace, Create new listing, Vehicle for sale. Look for a "Hide from friends" toggle. If it is there, turn it on. If it is missing, Facebook's documentation says that is expected for vehicles.
  2. Open your Marketplace profile and see what a stranger sees: your name, photo, listings and ratings.
  3. Go through Facebook privacy settings and set the audience for your friends list, past posts and profile details to what you are comfortable showing a buyer.
  4. Review your profile as another person would. Facebook has a "View as" option for that in the profile menu on many versions of the app.
  5. For specific people you do not want seeing your activity, use Facebook's block or restricted-list tools on their profile. Blocking is complete and they may notice. Restricted-list style options are quieter but limited, so read what each does in the current app before using it.

Blocking versus hiding

Blocking a person stops them from seeing your profile and interacting with you on Facebook, which also reduces the chance they see your listings. It is a heavy tool. It is not something I would do to a coworker or relative just to keep them off your inventory, because that creates its own drama.

The Honest Limits

The Bigger Decision for Salespeople

If seeing your inventory on your own profile bothers you or your family, be honest about that before you start. My take on the tradeoffs is in should car salespeople post on personal Facebook. There is also the option of using the dealership's own page, but trade press reported that Meta stopped supporting vehicle listings created from Business Pages from January 30, 2023, and as I cover in dealership page vs personal profile for Marketplace inventory, that path has its own limits. And if your dealership has rules on this, ask before you post from a personal account.

Quick answers

Can I hide vehicle listings from friends on Marketplace?

Facebook's Help Center says the option is not available for vehicles right now. Check your own app, since Facebook changes things.

Will my friends get notified when I post a car?

I could not find a documented answer for vehicles. The hide setting is described as preventing timeline posts and friend notifications, but only where it is available. Assume they may see it.

Can buyers see my personal profile?

They can open your Marketplace profile, and they can see whatever your regular profile privacy settings allow the public to see. Tighten those settings if that matters to you.

Does a second Facebook account solve this?

I would not go that route. Facebook's rules expect one personal account per person, and a new account also has little history, which matters for Marketplace trust. I have not verified Facebook's current wording, so read it yourself.

Where LotLift Fits

LotLift posts from the personal Facebook profile you connect. It does not set friend-visibility options for you, so check that setting in Facebook yourself, and remember that for vehicles the toggle may not exist at all. Automation also does not change who can see a listing. LotLift posts new listings only. It does not mark cars sold, delete, renew or edit anything on Facebook, does not sync price changes, does not reply to messages, and runs on Windows with Chrome. Facebook does not officially support third-party posting automation, and Meta's terms restrict automated access without permission, so nothing here is a guarantee. See how LotLift automates this.
